Today my hands are aching and bruised from playing peteca. Though almost as popular as football and volleyball in Brazil, peteca is essentially unknown to the rest of the world. Imagining that this sport must be practiced world-wide, most Brazilians are unaware of its indigenous origins. Peteca is best described as badminton without racquets, where hands are used to smack the feather and rubber contraption know as “the peteca” over to the opponent’s side.
